Review: Williams & Humbert Dos Maderas PX 5+5

Dos Maderas means "two types of wood", and the meaning of 5+5 is that this blend of rums from Guyana and Barbados first has been aged for five years in the Caribbean, shipped to Spain and aged three more years in Dos Cortados sherry casks before the last stage, where the rum is matured two more years in Pedro Ximénez sherry casks, hence the "PX". This should have created a unique flavour profile for the final product, and I was really curious about it.

Nose: The beautiful mahogany coloured rum has got prominent aromas of raisins, burnt sugar, various spices like nutmeg and allspice, and of course obvious sherry notes.

Mouth: A very deep, sweet sherry taste followed by rather pungent notes of raisins, molasses and tropical fruits and spices with a rich and long finish. This is a delicious and well balanced rum which feels and tastes very luxurious, but maybe there is a bit too much sherry in the mix for my taste.

Rum Old Fashioned
Even though most people might consider Dos Maderas PX 5+5 to be a sipping rum, I wanted to try it in a few cocktails as well. First, just a simple Rum Old Fashioned (60 ml Dos Maderas PX 5+5, 5 ml simple syrup, 2 dashes Angostura bitters - stir in mixing glass and pour into Old Fashioned glass with fresh ice, finish with orange zest). I actually think it was a big improvement, it works very well with the spices in Angostura bitters and the dilution reveals some other pleasant flavours and the sherry notes become a bit more subdued.

Mai Tai
I also thought it would work well in my favourite Mai Tai (40 ml Dos Maderas PX 5+5, 20 ml Rhum Clément VSOP, 15 ml Pierre Ferrand Dry Curacao, 7,5 ml Monin orgeat, 7,5 ml simple syrup, 30 ml lime juice, shake with ice, pour into Double Old Fashioned glass, add crushed ice, garnish with spent lime shell and mint sprig) - and it really did! The result is of course very different from a Mai Tai with funky aged Jamaican rum - but the sherry plays surprisingly well with the orgeat and curacao - highly recommended!

Dos Maderas PX 5+5 is now available in the special order section of Systembolaget in Sweden.

  1. Interesting. I've only seen the name Dos Maderas before, but didn't know much about it. Do you know where it's aged, in Guyana or Barbados?
Good that they have 2 different sizes at Systembolaget. 500 ml for 295 SEK, perhaps I should try it...

  2. Can't find the info anywhere, I guess that it's aged in both Guyana and Barbados, and blended in Spain.

Yes it's definitely an interesting rum worth trying!
