Tales of the Cocktail - Pig & Punch by The Bon Vivants

One of the things I was really looking forward to when planning for my first Tales of the Cocktail in New Orleans was Pig & Punch - a charity event by Bon Vivants where all money raised through T-shirt sales was to be donated to New Orleans KIPP Charter Schools. It was the third annual Pig & Punch but actually the first one to be an official festival event.

When walking from our apartment on St Philip Street, we noticed huge dark clouds in the sky which seemed to be headed our way. Fortunately, we were spared from rain and wind and could enjoy a really nice and hot afternoon at Washington Square.

There were lots of people everywhere, eating and drinking, playing games in the grass and watching whole pigs being cooked slowly on a spit over open fire. The air was filled with amazing mouth-watering aromas, and when I finally got to taste the pig, it was cooked to perfection and served with a selection of vegetables and sauces. In other words, a perfect way to start the day - and even better when the brass band started playing.

Pig...

In addition to the food, there were six trash barrels filled with different punches, all of them very promising so I felt the need to sample them all. My favourites were Edwardian Quiddities with Hendrick's gin, Solerno, Drambuie, Luxardo Bitter, mango, lime, rose water, chamomile tea, and Scoundrels & Aristo-Cats with Don Q Añejo rum, The King's Ginger, Bärenjäger, Pamplemousse Rose Liqueur, grapefruit juice, lime juice, bourbon rooibos tea, cardamom pods.

... and Punch!

All in all, it was definitely one of the highlights of my short visit in New Orleans, and I definitely hope that I'll be able to make it back next year. In that case, I'll make sure to stay longer because time just slipped away...
