Launch party and bitters master class at Le rouge

A couple of days ago, I was invited to the launch party of The Cocktail Boutique, a brand new web shop from Barkonsult with focus on premium ingredients, glassware and other necessary accessories for the serious craft cocktail bartender. After a nice lunch at Le bar, the event continued downstairs with a bitters master class by Alexander Hauck from German company The Bitter Truth.

Alexander Hauck

He started with a short and comprehensive presentation of the history of bitters, from its medicinal use to prohibition and the current explosion of small batch cocktail bitters around the world - including The Bitter Truth.

After the history lesson, he stirred four Dry Martinis with different bitters, just to illustrate how they each change the flavour profile of the drink.

Dry Martini
60 ml gin
20 ml dry vermouth
2-3 dashes bitters (Celery Bitters, Orange Bitters, Creole Bitters, Jerry Thomas' Bitters)

Stir with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

Then he showcased some of their liqueurs and bitters by making a couple of drinks, all of them very tasty. Before making the Manhattan, he told us about a neat trick to transform bourbon into rye - just use 1 part Pimento Dram to 5 parts bourbon - works like magic, sort of...

30 ml Elixier
10 ml Pimento Dram
2-3 dashes Orange Bitters

Stir with ice and strain into a chilled cocktail glass.

It's nice to see that a small company like The Bitter Truth is doing well and expanding even - I think it's very reassuring that it's possible to create a successful line of niche products with genuine passion and hard work - well done!
