In the end of September, I went to München to celebrate Oktoberfest together with millions of lederhosen-wearing people. In addition to having fun and drinking beer at Theresienwiese, I also managed to visit a number of cocktail bars around the city, and found that there are quite a few really good ones. Here's a small guide, so you won't need to do as much research as I did (if you don't want to, of course):
Mai Tai @ Pacific Times
Nice, old fashioned restaurant and bar with an extensive cocktail list - drinks were well made, food serviceable.
Fancy hotel bar with nice atmosphere and ambitious cocktail list - interesting signature drinks with fresh herbs and spices.
One of the most positive experiences - and old but not very well known cocktail bar which sometimes is accessed only by ringing the door bell. Great atmosphere and perfectly executed cocktails.
Very small and crowded prohibition style cocktail bar with impeccable service and drinks. Highly recommended, but be early!
Tabacco Daiquiri @ Bar Tabacco
Another favourite - a speakeasy style cocktail bar, very close to Trader Vic's. According to the bartender, the owner wants to keep it old school, which means a website is out of the question. Good cocktail list, mainly classics but also a few signature drinks.
Die Goldene Bar
Die Goldene Bar
Beautiful restaurant and bar inside Haus der Kunst. I was disappointed with the uninspired service, and the bartender screwed up my order. I'll give it another chance, though...
Tiki Puka Puka @ Trader Vic's
One of the classic Trader Vic's destinations in the basement of Bayerischer Hof hotel - mixed clientele, mostly hotel guests enjoying the escapism. Drinks were surprisingly good, as I recently was very disappointed with Trader Vic's in L.A.
Very popular and well known American bar owned by the famous Charles Schumann - author of a number of cocktail books. Nice mix of classic cocktails and in-house creations.
Mauro's Negroni Club
Mauro's Negroni Club
One of two bars called Negroni in München, both are very close to each other - unfortunately the other one was closed during my visit. Mauro's is a nice and well stocked cocktail bar, with lots of Negroni twists on the menu.
Unfortunately, not the best publicity for the Cuban lifestyle or the rum brand - overly sweet cocktails in a place which for some reason seems to attract lots of party crazy students.
Mint Julep @ Juleps
Breisacher Str. 18
Great "New York bar & restaurant" close to Ostbahnhof with tasty steaks, burgers and cocktails - with several different Juleps on the menu.
Sophisticated bar in the same hotel as Trader Vic's with lots of classic and modern cocktails to choose from. Unfortunately, horrible lounge music made my visit less enjoyable.. also, the only bar I've been to where cocktails are served with gummi bears as snacks. Weird.
Classy restaurant and coffee/cocktail bar - short but intriguing cocktail list with some unusual ingredients, and attentive bartenders. Well worth a visit if you can find it.
Painkiller @ Pusser's Bar
According to themselves, the oldest cocktail bar in München - it opened in 1974. Friendly and knowledgeable staff, and in addition to a great Painkiller you also have the possibility to buy Pusser's memorabilia. Downstairs you'll find a piano bar on certain evenings.
Zombie @ Jahreszeiten Bar
Stylish cocktail bar inside the five star Vier Jahreszeiten hotel - dark wood and arm chairs you could easily fall asleep in.. if it weren't for the great service and cocktails. A bit on the expensive side, though - and the uptight atmosphere could be intimidating for some.
